Breaking Into Tech? Avoid These 3 Mistakes.

Are you bored with your current career and want to switch to Tech?

I had a similar experience back in 2020. During the pandemic, I did my Nursing Internship as a BSc—Registered Nurse at a reputable hospital. I had to put in long unpaid hours due to the staff shortage. I was experiencing burnout and gradually lost the enthusiasm to render care at the expense of my health.

I longed to work from home, within my schedule, and make cool money.

Remote Tech jobs were booming then, and I decided to break into Tech completely.

In retrospect, that was the best decision I made. Here are some of the mistakes that slowed my complete transition.

I lacked adequate education and information

I tried doing everything at once

I had no affiliation with any tech community

After a long deliberation, I made the complete switch. If I had known these excellent tips I am about to share with you, I would have made the transition faster.

If my story resonates with you, or you have been considering a career transition, let me guide you on the three mistakes to avoid while you transition into Tech.

Lack of Adequate Education

To master a skill, you need first to gain the right knowledge.

When I started my tech journey, I took a three-week BootCamp and thought that was all I needed to get a well-paying job. I quickly realized the jokes were on me when I got no response from the several job applications I made. I enrolled for a more thorough education to increase my chances of getting hired.

There are a lot of notable online programs you can embark on, both free and paid.

Here's a list of some of the most notable Tech certification programs you could try:

FreeCodeCamp: FreeCodeCamp provides a comprehensive curriculum covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more. The best part is it's entirely free.

Codecademy: Codecademy offers interactive coding lessons in various programming languages. They have both free and premium content.

Udacity: Udacity offers nano degree programs in collaboration with industry leaders, focusing on real-world projects and skills needed in the tech industry.

Coursera: Coursera hosts courses from top universities and companies. You can audit many courses for free or pay for certificates and specializations.

edX: edX is another platform that provides high-quality courses from universities and institutions worldwide. It offers a wide range of tech-related subjects.

Being a Jack-of-All-Trades

The Tech space is enormous. It's more profitable to niche down and specialize.

While learning, I ventured into almost all the tech fields, from Product design to Automated Testing. I soon realized I could not be a master of any skill if I did not have a specialty. I took it upon myself to quickly understand the different responsibilities of various niches and settled on the one that resonated best with my innate abilities.

Once I decided on a niche, it was easier to progress in my desired field.

Poor Communication and Networking Skills

Coming from a Nursing background, I was a stranger to the tech space and needed someone to ask for advice.

This lack of social networks played a massive role in my slow transition, and fortunately, I came to the realization on time, which saved me dearly. I made active efforts to build my LinkedIn profile and connect with people within my niche of choice. I also joined and engaged in Tech spaces on Twitter and followed popular Tech icons sharing my field.

I signed up for and attended several Tech events and physically put in effort to network with people in my niche. It was tough but necessary, and I'm happy I did.

Improving and increasing the quality of my network improved my net worth in the end.

By working on these three mistakes, I was able to make a successful transition into the Field of Technology.

I learned that to break into Tech successfully, the proper education, niche, and network are vital in determining your success.

If you prepare correctly, the transition will be smooth and seamless.
